Stronger Together: The Power of Jiu-Jitsu Beyond The Mats

Writer: Lucas SilvaLucas Silva

As humans, we are social by nature. We can survive alone, but we grow and thrive when we are together.

Even though we live in big cities and have the internet to connect with others, studies show that up to 70% of people feel lonely. But loneliness isn’t just about feeling sad—it can harm mental health, increase the risk of diseases, and even shorten lives.

But why do so many people feel lonely when we have more ways than ever to stay connected?

Our world focuses too much on individual success instead of helping each other grow. From a young age, we are taught to use our communities to get ahead and leave when they are no longer useful. This creates winners and losers—but in the end, everyone loses. By competing together, not against each other—this is the heart of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Though an individual sport, we train as a team, pushing each other to improve. I don’t just aim to win today; I help my partner grow so I can face a better version of them tomorrow.

This lesson applies to life, too. When you help others rise, you rise with them.

Look around—you are already part of many communities: your family, your school, your neighborhood. Instead of competing just to be better than others, compete to make each other better. Not only will you find more success, but you’ll also build a stronger, more connected team around you.

Because at the end of the day, there’s no point in being the best sailor if the ship is sinking.

Let’s work together, support each other, and create a world where we all grow—side by side.
