Our Method
At Gracie Barra, we believe anyone can learn Jiu-Jitsu and enjoy its many benefits, like better health, more confidence, and stronger discipline. To make learning fun and easy, we follow a unique method designed by Master Carlos Gracie Jr., based on over 40 years of teaching.
Our programs are built on six important parts:
-
Curriculums – Step-by-step lessons that make learning simple and organized.
-
Pre-requisites – Skills or goals you need to join certain programs.
-
Classes – Fun sessions where you practice techniques with your coach and classmates.
-
Training Methods – Special drills that help you learn how to use techniques in real situations.
-
Minimum Attendance – The number of classes you should attend to stay on track and improve.
-
Belt System – Levels that show your progress and help you work toward becoming a Black Belt.
Most students start in the GB1 Program – Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals to build strong foundations. After about 4 months, they move to the GB2 Program – Advanced Jiu-Jitsu to learn even more exciting moves. Learn more about our adult program here!
We also offer special kids' programs for ages 3-13, designed to teach self-defense, build confidence, and promote discipline in a fun environment. From Little Champions 1 and 2 to the Juniors Program, every child can enjoy learning and growing with Jiu-Jitsu. Learn more about our kids' programs here!
Gracie Barra’s method has helped thousands of people around the world improve their lives and become incredible athletes. No matter your age or skill level, you can succeed with Gracie Barra! 🥋

Our Story
Gracie Barra started in 1986 when Master Carlos Gracie Jr. opened the first school in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. From this small beginning, it grew to become the largest Jiu-Jitsu organization in the world, with over 1000 schools in places like North America, Brazil, Australia, Japan, and Europe.
Master Carlos built Gracie Barra to share Jiu-Jitsu with everyone. He created programs to help instructors and school owners build their careers and spread the art of Jiu-Jitsu. In 2005, he opened the first Gracie Barra school outside Brazil, located in Irvine, California.
Today, Master Carlos's dream is to bring Jiu-Jitsu to every city in the world so everyone can experience the confidence, discipline, and fun of training at Gracie Barra.
